I hope you all had good holidays (are having depending on how the back half the year looks for you ;))

How has your writing year been?

I didn't make my word count - but I wrote more than I did last year, and I posted most of what I wrote instead of just adding to my pile of WiPs like normal! I can't say I learned a lot this year, writing wise, but I'm more focused than I was ;)

How does the year ahead look for you?

Hope December is treating you all well so far - and sorry for being less active this month, it's that busier time!

So - 2018 pledge claims are live - is anyone going to go for one of the new pledges?

I think I'm going to stick to a word count pledge - somehow I feel I'll feel less pressure/bad if I fail word count, versus failing to write the number of days I pledge....

Hello everyone.
I hope you wrote all or at least some of the words you wanted to during November :)
I'm not seeing a lot of comments going on in these posts - and therefore not sure if these posts are helpful or not but let's keep going, the end of the year is near.

How close are you to your GYWO goal? Completed it? So close? Halfway? Plans for next year to increase, decrease, keep the same goal or try the new option of 'days written'?

How is everyone doing? It's been a bit of an odd month for me, my wordcount more erratic than usual (and it's frequently erratic) and I'm still behind on NaNo! I have written my yuletide fic and a couple of treats, and edited one big bang fic over the last six weeks though :)

It's check in time again - how are you all doing?

The end of November isn't all that far off now, as I have been reminded by nano emails mentioning that we'd passed the halfway mark

I haven't managed quite the word count I'd intended, but I am up from last month so that's a bonus!

Hey there, y'all! We're nearly halfway through November - and I imagine at least a few of us have our heads down pushing through NaNo. Personally, I sign up for [personal profile] miniwrimo, instead, because I've never yet succeeded at the 50k in a month thing, and I appreciate the set your own daily word-count goal flexibility it offers. That said, I'm a bit behind on my word-count even for that, so I really need to step up the pace for the rest of the month. Not least because I've also got two holiday fest assignments that still need ALL THE WORDS. Plus a list of Yuletide treats as long as my arm. So, here's hoping I can make that work!

So, how're things going for everybody else? Deep in the middle of a novel or fest assignment (or two)? Editing like the wind? Just trying to make word-count for GYWO by the end of the year? Come tell us all about it...

Oophs, a day late *face palm*

I've not gotten a huge amount of words out this month - but I'm hoping with an outline in place to get much more done for nano next month....

Is anyone else going to do nano?

How has October been treating you? Have you managed the word count you aimed for?

Hey, lookit that - it's an actual day in the two-day spread I agreed to post a check-in post on. Well, for a few more hours. Somewhere in the world. Improvement, anyway.

That said, in the ten days since I last posted a check-in post, I haven't written much of anything. I mean, I've added a few words to my Yuletide assignment, and thought further about some of the treats I want to write. And I've helped a friend brainstorm the skeleton of her assignment fic for another challenge she's signed up for. But I really need to hash out an actual at least quasi-outline for my Yuletide assignment, since I know where it starts - and where it ends - but the stuff in the middle is mostly a huge question mark. And while my writing style is traditionally pretty much seat-of-the-pants revelations until the plot coheres enough for me to know how it HAS to go, it does help to know what a few of the wayposts along the way look like. So, outlining. Vaguely. And maybe reading some in my chosen trope (s) for research. Haha.

Are the rest of you more outliners or pantsers, some weird hybrid of both...or something completely else?

Hey guys! How are you doing? Weather has been super weird here due to Storm Ophelia, red sun, yellow skies.
I haven't written in days so I hope you are doing better than me.

...back to only a day late! Next time I might even be on time! It could be a thing?

That said, I haven't done much writing this past week, though I've had my Yuletide assignment for a few days now and that + trawling for letters has left me with a list of things I want to write as long as, well, at least my fore-arm. It's a good mix of stuff, too: different formats (straight fic, epistolary, poetry) and different types of fic (a bit of porn, a bit of non-porny shippy stuff, even a little gen). So now I just need to brainstorm and research enough that sitting my butt down in front of the computer can have some useful word-count results!

Anyway, how's everybody else doing? And are any of you as excited as me about holiday fest things?

Ta,

Kat

So it's our last check in for this month - how has the month gone?

How do you feel about the check ins? I know I didn't always manage to reply (sorry) but it was good having the schedule :)

I haven't written as much as intended this month, but I've written, which is always good!

Hey, y'all - this is slightly improved from my last try: only a day behind schedule!

Anyway, for post content this time, I'm thinking about the dichotomy between when I intellectually think of a story as done vs how my subconscious feels about this. Specifically, I'm thinking about fest fics. Because, sure, in an ideal world, every fic you finished for a fest/exchange/whathaveyou would be the best version of the story that you, personally, could write. But at least for me, what I find happens is that I end up posting a version of that story that does qualify as a story - it's got a beginning, middle and end, no glaring plot-holes, clean SPAG, etc - but I know in my heart that given more time with it, I could've made it better. So, intellectually, I know that if I picked it up again, wrote some new scenes, rewrote others, etc, etc, I would most likely end up with a product superior to the original.

But it's been posted! And on a subconscious level my brain has shifted it over from the pile marked WIP to the one marked FINISHED. So even with those stories where I actually know exactly what I'd want to add, it generally doesn't happen. Which, to be fair, probably also has something to do with the size of my WIP pile - but not entirely. And so I've been thinking, lately, about whether I want to try and change that, and, if so, what might be effective...

Anyway, I'd be interested in hearing from anybody who has any thoughts on this - and otherwise, just let us know how the back half of this week has been treating you! Got a problem you'd like some help with? A success you want to celebrate? Or do you just need some cheer-leading or commiseration? Well, we're open to all of the above, here, so sit down, pour yourself the beverage of your choice, and tell us all about it...

I went with today to give a little more space between checkins this time!

How are you all doing?

I've not gotten much written, but I'm doing research for various things (which may well be epic when written) - so hopefully the back end of the month will go better...

Half way ish through the month, are you meeting your targets? Or you like me and get caught up researching/casting your ocs?

Happy Thursday!
How is everyone doing? Meeting your goals? Procrastinating on the internet? Editing with purpose? Editing in despair? Dithering over Yuletide nominations or what fests so sign up for?

I wrote a summary of a fic I might use for the Black Sails Bang (I have two Small Fandom Big Bangs also in the works) and I wrote a 3400 word ficlet yesterday so I'm feeling I've had quite a productive week :)
kinetikatrue: (Default)
[personal profile] kinetikatrue
Hahaha - so, yes, the late trend continues! I was actually intending to be a day late (to give the post before mine a little more time to run its course), but then yesterday got away from me, and somehow it's today and I'm two days late and, well, here we are!

So, friends, how's the writing going? Feel like you accomplished something since we last spoke? Having a problem you could use our help with? Staring at the screen, willing the words to come? Has life been getting in the way? Or has writing been getting in the way of life? Open up a comment and tell us all about it!

And for a more specific question: when you feel like you have a general sense of what a story needs to be even better, how do you figure out how to translate that into specifics?
